A 3D platformer made in Unity: the little man from the emergency exit sign runs through the door and escapes the fire across floating platforms.

The challenge

The idea started from a simple question: what if the little man on the emergency exit sign actually ran through the white door next to him? The goal was to turn that idea into a playable 3D platformer, designing, modelling and programming a complete demo level.

The approach

I programmed the game in Unity and modelled all the in-game 3D assets in Maya. The level mixes platforming with obstacles such as flame throwers, logs and falling rocks, and ends with an escape from a dragon, flying with a fire extinguisher used as a jetpack. The 2D animation of the sign was made by animating a 3D character and rendering it from an orthographic view.

Character animations come from Mixamo and the cutscene models from the Unity Asset Store; the sound design was done in Audition.

The result

A playable demo level, from the title screen to the final escape, with its own cutscene, gameplay and sound. The full gameplay is in the video at the top of this page.

Breakdown

03 ASSETS

From sign to game.

Everything starts from the emergency exit sign: its little man was animated as a 3D character and rendered in orthographic view, so that he still looks like a flat pictogram before he jumps into the game.
