Product rendering study

A 3D product rendering study of a vintage Cosina film camera, built from scratch from photographic references.

The challenge

Black objects are some of the hardest to render well: without careful light they turn into flat silhouettes. The goal was to revisit this vintage film camera with a more mature product-rendering approach, focusing on how black materials respond to light, on lens reflections and on macro details, so that it would feel like a real photographic object and not just a technical model.

The approach

I built the entire asset from scratch, starting from photographic references: modelling and UVs in Blender, texturing in Substance 3D Painter, then shading, lighting and rendering in Blender, and final post-production in Photoshop. Worn metal, subtle roughness variation, engraved markings, glass reflections and controlled lighting were all part of the final look.

The same model also drives the render passes on the 3D CGI page.

The result

A cinematic but realistic product presentation, with hero shots and macro close-ups that show the kind of product imagery Second Orbit can deliver for campaigns.

Breakdown

02 ASSETS

Built for close-ups.

Modelled from photographic references and detailed for macro shots: engraved markings, knurled rings and lens glass all had to hold up from a few centimetres away.
